Receiving Holy Communion
Only Roman Catholics who are in the state of grace are permitted to receive Holy Communion. Catholics who are guilty of serious sin must go to Confession before receiving the Eucharist. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available starting a half-hour before all weekend Masses.
Communion must be received either in the hand (which should be clean) or directly on the tongue. When receiving on the hand (which must be cupped), the Host must be placed on the tongue before turning from the altar. Respect for the real presence of JESUS CHRIST in the Eucharist is a serious matter for Catholics, and every effort must be made to fulfill our obligations with the highest regard for the importance and solemnity of the Sacrament.
