“Western Mysticism and St. John of the Cross Book Study”
Western mysticism dates back to antiquity. One of the most famous and prolific mystics was St. John of the Cross, a 16th Century Spanish priest whose compelling literary contributions continue to influence and inspire us to this day. A new 10-week program, “Western Mysticism and St. John of the Cross,” will examine some of his brilliant writings and explore how these works can expand our own spiritual quest for answers. Participants will read “The Ascent of Mount Carmel,” “The Living Flame,” and “The Dark Night of the Soul.” A collection of his poetry will also be studied. Fr. Robert Sprott, O.F.M., will provide the presentations. In addition to a Master’s degree in Anthropology and Theology, Fr. Sprott also has a doctorate in Linguistics. He currently serves as the associate pastor at St. Agnes of Bohemia parish in Chicago.
The program will be conducted on Thursdays from 5:45 p.m. until 7:45 p.m. beginning February 23, 2012. All sessions will be offered at the Newberry Library, 60 W. Walton Street in Chicago (just a few blocks west of Michigan Avenue). A fee of $210 covers all 10 lectures. Senior citizens past 65 as well as students with a current school identification card may get a 10 percent tuition discount. If you would like to register or require additional information, you can go to www.newberry.org or telephone the Newberry Library at (312) 255-3700.
